Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker To Deliver Speech Tonight At SquashBusters from Squash Media
April 29, 2016
- On Friday evening at 5:00 PM, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker
will visit the world’s first urban squash program, SquashBusters, in
celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the program that started it
all. The governor will tour the facility, which has a home on the
Northeastern University campus, and speak to students from Boston and
Lawrence about the importance of strong character, a college education
and a healthy lifestyle.
By visiting the program, Gov. Baker
will be following in the footsteps of three of his predecessors: Gov.
Deval Patrick visited with former governor Michael Dukakis in 2014, and
Gov. William Weld was on the founding Board of Directors of the
organization in 1996. Gov. Baker’s visit demonstrates the continuing
interest and commitment that the state has in programs with a
demonstrated impact on improving outcomes for Massachusetts youth.
SquashBusters
has served more than 500 young people from Boston and Lawrence since
its inception in 1996. The first urban squash program of its kind,
SquashBusters is a sports-based after school youth development program
that uses a combination of squash and fitness, academic enrichment, and
character development to open doors and prepare students for college.
SquashBusters has served as the model for what has now become an
international movement that promises to improve the health, character
and educational success of thousands of urban youth. The Boston program
paved the way for urban squash and education programs in twenty U.S.
cities, including New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Chicago and San
Diego, as well as several programs abroad. Together, these programs
serve more than 2,000 students worldwide.
