Loving Statistics: Comparing the World's Two Best... by Bob Hanscom
Nicol David and Ramy
Ashour - winners of the 2013 U.S Open
April 2, 2013
- No doubt, the latest reports regarding Ramy Ashour's recent
accomplishments of winning 36 straight matches and being the #1 male
squash-player in the world is, to be sure, very impressive! And what
about our world #1 female squash-player Nicol David! How do they
compare? Let's take a quick look...
RAMY: Highest point-average ever recorded, 1,872.50! NICOL: Current
point-average, 2,958.82!
RAMY: More than 700 points above his nearest rival, Nick Matthew!
NICOL: More than 900 points above her nearest rival, Laura Massaro!
RAMY: 36 match wins in a row! NICOL: With 64 matches played, a 59-5
win/loss record!
RAMY: Remarkable consistency! NICOL: Two runs of 27 and 22 straight
match wins over the last 15 months, seven world championship titles and
the #1 player in the world for 84 months, seven years total since
January of 2006!
RAMY: Fantastic role model and attitude! NICOL: Well...what more can be
said!
To be sure, with their behavior, example and success on and off the
court, both Ramy and Nicol are perhaps the greatest good will
ambassadors and role models our (or any) game has ever had, which
should be emulated, especially by our up and coming young junior
players.
Let's hope that the IOC Executive Committee will take these facts into
account and make the "right" decision at their May 29th meeting, just
eight weeks from now! Stay tuned!
