Vargas Beats Domenick to Capture NY Met Singles, Cipriano/Hartigan Win Doubles from Squash Media
Will Hartigan (L) and Peter Cipriano of the Racquet and Tennis Club and the NYAC- 2015 Met A Doubles Champions
April 7, 2015 -
Andres Vargas defeated Alex Domenick in four games to win the NY Squash
Met Singles on March 26. Vargas, a former Trinity College
All-American originally from Colombia, defeated Domenick, a
southpaw Cornell alumnus, in a long and testing match hosted by
the NYAC on its exhibition court. Vargas surmounted a talented draw of
32 players who represented most of the clubs in Metro NY. Vargas
used his superb fitness , quickness and hard hitting to overcome the
creative shot making of Domenick, a Philadelphia squash protégé, who
was playing on his home NYAC courts .
The Met Doubles was won by Peter Cipriano and Will Hartigan who
defeated second – seeded Addison West and Dylan Patterson 5, 12,
(11), 12 on April 6th. The match was hosted by the
Racquet and Tennis Club on its magnificent high-ceilinged court.
The final pitted the speed and power of Cipriano and
Hartigan against the tactical savvy, percentage shot making
and varied change- of –pace in play of the very experienced West and
Patterson team. After 75 minutes of exciting, fast-paced play
Cipriano and Hartigan were able to squeeze out a few nicks which
provided the narrow margin of victory. The semi-finals featured
West and Patterson gallantly fighting back from a 2-0 deficit to
overcome the speedy team of Randy Lim and Andres Vargas . Cipriano and
Hartigan were able to defeat 2014 Silver Racquets champions and
formidable first seeds Alex Domenick and Chris Callis on
the final point in the fourth game
The Met A Singles and Doubles events were established in 1923 by the
NY University Club’s Arthur Lockett , former NY Squash president
and a pioneering national leader in the game of squash
racquets . Both events were contested annually with the
exception of the WW II period until 1994 when they were discontinued.
Both NY Squash Met A tournaments were revived after a
twenty year hiatus based upon the progressive vision of its new
Board of Directors under the able leadership of President
Steven Carter of the University Club. For the past twenty years
both Tiffany sterling silver perpetual trophies had
remained in the possession of Jonathan Foster who was the dual
winner of the last singles event and of the final doubles
event in partnership with the legendary Morris Clothier . The
trophies were located and graciously returned to NY Squash by
Jonathan in mid- March . NY Squash will hold them in perpetuity now
that both events have been resurrected . It is the vision of NY Squash
that these two events will provide the centerpiece for encouraging
competitive league and tournament play at the highest levels and
in promoting camaraderie among the members of all the clubs who
are part of the NY Squash family.
