- Rod Symington of North America (Vancouver, BC) has recently been appointed as Director of the newly structured WSF Rules Commission.

The WSF Management Committee decided at its February meeting that the Referees & Rules Committee should be restructured. It was agreed that two separate groups would be created to manage the two branches i.e. Rules Commission and a separate Referees Committee. (The Committee features representatives from all regions, whereas a Commission comprises centrally invited specialists). Former WSF world referee and current assessor, Rod Symington from Canada will chair the Commission.

As Director of the Rules Commission Rod is responsible for guiding the new Rules through the approval process (another 18 months). Then there are the Doubles Rules to bring into line with the Singles Rules. To quote Rod, "Lots of work still to do in retirement!"

Rod is the former (retired) Head of the Germanic Studies Department at the University of Victoria, in British Columbia - and has devoted much of his life to the thankless position of becoming one of the premier WSF Rules experts and squash referees in the world.

Rod served on the WSF Rules and Referees Committee and is a consultant on Rules and Refereeing to the USA. He has also been the Tournament Referee for, among others, the Women's Worlds, Pan Am Games, and Junior Men's and Women's World Championships, and most recently the WSF Referee Assessor at the 2012 CIMB Nicol David KL Open.

Rod published an excellent and very comprehensive booklet called "Squash Rules For Players," which explains the Rules of squash appropriately from the beginner to the advanced player. The text is accompanied by numerous illustrations, which makes the rules very clear in and for any situation. In fact, I know of many player-referees who use Rod's booklet as their squash Rules Bible!

We wish Rod good luck and much success in his new position as the Director of the new WSF Rules Commission.
