- Ottawa's Samantha Cornett sent this report to DSR following her solid
first round British Open qualifying win over French Under-19 champion
Julia Lecoq:
I had a great day today, I felt really good playing Julia. I was playing with a purpose, which was refreshing.
The first two games went
by pretty quickly. I tried to make the rallies long, and it paid
off, although I had to be careful not to give her much loose on her
backhand, as she has a dangerous volley drop. In the third I
decided to hit some more crosscourts without establishing straight
length, and she took advantage of that well, added some of her own good
length, and slotted in winners. She found the tin too much in all
three games though, which let me off the hook. I doubt I will
have the same luxury tomorrow!
Playing Line tomorrow,
our head to head history is not in my favour, but I feel great!
Looking forward to it, she is such a nice player and I've enjoyed our
past matches.
Enough of me though,
there were some other very interesting matches. Line's match with
Birgit was over an hour long; there were great rallies and gets, and
lots of lets. Melody and Maud's match was also very long, Maud
looked quite tired after the fourth, but she obviously never stopped,
and won in the fifth. Melody found the tin too much, which
rewarded Maud after their long long rallies. Olga and Joshna, a
really good match with long rallies, well fought, but Joshna was
crisper with good length and cracking kills.
Another lengthy one: Maria over Lucie. Back and forth with lets
and errors. They were both bumping into each other often, Lucie
got hit in the head with a racquet, Maria got hit in the leg with the
ball, and there was lots of tripping and falling! It was a
high-paced match, as both of them can crush the ball. Maria did
it a bit better than Lucie, putting her under so much pressure with her
length, and attacking from in front of her.
The other good one I saw was Coline vs Kanzy, Coline looks to be
playing really well. Her determination shows, as she didn't let
up; if she made a mistake, she refocused right away. And saw some
really great dives from Kanzy. Lots of other good matches as
well.
Tomorrow looks to be VERY exciting, great match-ups. Looking
forward to the glass court, things will be very different on there!
