Australia Names Boys' Team For July World Juniors from WS Media
May 23, 2012
- Darwin’s Rhys Dowling will lead the Australian team for the World
Junior Boys Championships to be held in Doha, Qatar in July 7-18.
Dowling, 17, is joined in the team by Queensland pair Tom Calvert and
TJ Rarere, and New South Wales’s Rohan Toole.
Perth’s Mathew Bridle
is the non-travelling reserve, while the team will be coached by
Australian great Rod Eyles, with South Australian James Rogers the
assistant coach.
Dowling is the current Australian Under 17 Champion and has also won national titles at Under 15 and Under 13 levels.
“Making the Australian
team had been my top priority, so now that I’ve done that I’ll have to
raise the bar a little,” he said. ”Hopefully I will give a good account
of myself in Doha, but there will be some very strong nations out
there.”
Squash Australia CEO
Gary O’Donnell said the team was one of the youngest Australian teams
of recent years, with Rarere, at 18, the oldest member of the team.
Dowling and Calvert are both 17, while Toole is just 15 and will still be eligible for the next championships in 2014.
“These four boys have
worked incredibly hard over the past 12 months to get themselves
selected,” O’Donnell said. “I am confident that they will represent
Australia with distinction in Doha.”
