Pezzota Over Delierre in $10K Paraguay Final by Nathan Clarke
26TH MAY 2015
- Robertino Pezzota celebrated his 100th match on the PSA World Tour in
fine style by becoming the first Argentinean player to win the Paraguay
Open, PSA Challenger 10 title after beating Shawn Delierre in the final
in Asunción.
Pezzota, who finished as the runner-up in this event in 2013, opened up
with a win against his brother Rodrigo in the first round and moved on
to upset top seed Martin Knight in straight games in the quarter-final.
Welshman Peter Creed met the same fate as the rampant Argentinian
advanced to the showpiece event.
Delierre’s semi-final clash against Muhd Asyraf Azan was arguably the
match of the tournament with the marathon five-game-thriller lasting an
incredible 136 minutes before the Canadian World No.56 snuck through to
earn the victory.
The match started at a frenetic pace with both players proving equal
despite there being 30 places between the pair in the World Rankings.
Delierre was aiming to win his second successive event after his
victory at the PSA Regatas Resistencia Open last time out but Pezzota,
who was eliminated in the semi-final of that event by Delierre, won the
opening game by an 11-9 margin.
Delierre’s mammoth semi-final encounter clearly affected the number two
seed and Pezzota took full advantage as he romped to 11-1 and 11-4
victories in the final two games to earn his fourth PSA World Tour
title.
