$70,000 PSA Mexico Open Cancelled from DailySquashReport.com
May 29, 2012 - The $70K PSA Mexico Open, scheduled for last week in Mexico City, did not take place.
According to PSA Chief
Executive Alex Gough, the Mexican government had been involved in the
staging of the event, but a problem surfaced.
"The Government
reneged on their agreement for the location of the event," Gough said.
"They then couldn't find a suitable spot that would have kept the
sponsors happy."
The event had a full 32-draw ready and had been loaded with international stars.
Ramy Ashour was the top seed, followed by Amr Shabana.
North Americans Julian Illingworth and Shawn Delierre were both entered.
The women's edition of
the Mexico Open went off last week as scheduled. The $10K WSA event was
won by 16-year-old Egyptian Yathreb Adel, the world #35, over Ireland's
Aisling Blake.
Regarding the cancelled men's event, Gough said, "Very unfortunate for all involved."
