May 4, 2012-
Joshana Chinappa led the charge of the Indian women’s team against the
2nd seeded Malaysia in their all important final pool match at the 16th
Asian Team Squash Championship being held in Kuwait from 1-5 May 2012.
Seeded third it was always going to be an uphill task against the
higher ranked Malaysians, and especially after Joshana losing the first
game things did not look good for the Indian contingent. However, a
disciplined and defiant Joshana turned things around very quickly
winning the second game 11-4.
With this impetus Joshana won the third game convincingly and was
leading 7-3 in the fourth until we saw a fight back from Delia who took
the lead 10-9. At thatmoment Joshana’s adrenalin was pumping and she
played a few wonderful volleys and cross-court drops to win the game
and match.
With the Indians leading 1-0, Anaka went on against Siti who ranked
around 50 places above her. Anaka raced off to a 4-0 lead in the first
and held on to her leads throughout the match winning in straight
games. It was a brilliant performance all round.
By virtue of this victory India top their pool and play against
5thseeded Korea in the semifinals while the Malaysian’s will be playing
to play top seeded Hong Kong.
The Indian men’s team also galloped into the semi finals defeating Japan 3-0.
A steady performance by all the men ensured no hiccups and will play against hosts Kuwait in the semi finals.
