Four Figures Already For World Squash Day 2012 Challenge by Steve Cubbins
June 11, 2012
- More than 1,000 players have already signed up to compete in World
Squash Day’s 2020 Challenge to back the sport’s Olympic bid.
Less than a week after the launch of the 2012 World Squash Day, which
takes place on October 20th, clubs from around the world have flocked
to sign up for the groundbreaking “Team Squash v Team 2020” match which
organisers hope will be the biggest sports match in history.
Clubs from England, Scotland, Belgium, Italy, India, Pakistan, New
Zealand and the Czech Republic have already committed to the match and
many thousands more are expected to follow suit.
The format at each club is to have two teams of 20 players, each
representing Team Squash or Team 2020, although many clubs have already
signed up to hold 30-a-side events.
Each individual match between two players is played to 20 points, and
the club’s total score is added to the global tally to decide the
ultimate winners.
Clubs are planning a range of activities to run alongside the match to
promote the game and back the World Squash Federation’s bid for
inclusion in the Olympic Programme for 2020.
Some clubs are holding radar gun challenges to see if anyone can beat
Australian Cam Pilley’s world record speed of 175mph, while others are
holding doubles challenges, free coaching, big screen videos of famous
players, Olympic petitions, and more!
