– The Canadian Men’s National Squash Team finished 2-1 after pool play
concluded to claim 2nd place in Pool B at the World Men’s Team
Championships in Mulhouse, France. This placing moves them onto the
next round, the Round of 16, where they enter a single-elimination draw
to determine who will be the World Men’s Team Champions in 2013.
This afternoon in France, Canada faced a must-win match against
Colombia, with the winner claiming second place in the Pool and moving
onto the Round of 16. Andrew Schnell of Calgary, playing in the 3rd
position, started off the action with a 3-1 win over Colombia’s Andres
Vargas, 11-4, 5-11, 11-9, 11-4. Montreal’s Shawn Delierre, Canada’s #1
player who is ranked 40th in the world, went down in straight games to
World #19 Miguel Rodrigues, 6-11, 8-11, 6-11.
The encounter came down to the 3rd pairing of Dane Sharp and former US
Intercollegiate Champion Bernardo Samper. Sharp, a determined and
feisty player from Toronto, fought off Sampler in a close opening game
with a 13-11 win, and then solidified the match for Canada in straight
games 11-3 and 11-6.
Team Canada enters into a tough match in the Round of 16 tomorrow, as
they take on the top-seeded Egyptians. Egypt is the heavy favourite to
win a 3rd straight Championship, having won in 2009 and 2011. All four
members of Team Egypt are ranked within the World Top-12.
