- Team Canada finished the 2013 World Mens Team Championships with a
2-0 win over their neighbours to the south, the United States, to take
11th place.
David Letourneau, playing in the third position, took the court first
for Canada against well-known American Gilly Lane. Lane opened the
match with a 11-8 win, before Letourneau took two straight games 11-4.
Lane battled back to win the fourth 11-9, forcing the deciding game
which Letourneau won 11-9. It was a close match, and Letourneau was
very pleased to pull out the win against the former Top-50 player.
With Canada up 1-0, Shawn Delierre took to the court against US #1
Christopher Gordon. A close game with extra points started off
this match, with Delierre coming out on top 12-10. Gordon took the
second 11-8, before Delierre finished him off 11-6,11-5. This gave the
3-1 win to Delierre and the 2-0 win to Canada.
Canada was ranked 15th coming into the event, to the United States
tournament ranking of 11th. A small indicator of success, Canada is
happy to have finished higher than their ranking and beat out some of
the higher seeded teams.
Team Canada was comprised of Shawn Delierre from Montreal, Toronto's
Dane Sharp, and Andrew Schnell and David Letourneau, both of Calgary.
They were supported by coach Yvon Provençal of Montreal and team
therapist Jim Mylonas of Toronto. Congratulations to the entire team on
a great week of squash!
