Pomportes Punishes Top Seed In Ile Rousse
by Fram Gommendy

June 20, 2012 - There were two upset results in the quarter-finals of the WSA $5k Ile Rousse International on the French island of Corsica, the biggest of which saw home favourite Laura Pomportes take out the top seed.

After dropping the first game Pomportes the sixth seed, rallied to take the next three to beat Austria’s Birgit Coufal for one of the best wins of her career.

“I think what made the difference in the games I won was that I was more incisive at the front,” said a delighted winner, “but I was also lucky that she made a few mistakes.”

Pomportes will meet a fellow giant-killer for a place in the final after Egyptian qualifier Nadeen Shahin continued her impressive run to take out a second successive seed, this time beating France’s Chloe Mesic in four games.

“I went on court confident after yesterday’s win,” said Nadeen. “Coming from 2-0 down to win would give anybody confidence, and today I managed to come from 10/7 down to win the third, I had nothing to lose and just went for it!”

The other half of the draw sees the second and third seeds meet after England’s Sarah-Jane Perry and France’s Maud Duplomb both won in straight games, taking just over 20 minutes to see off Sally Skaarenborg and Zephanie Curcenven respectively.

“I have to be ruthless,” confessed Perry, “otherwise I let them back in and play rubbish!” Duplomb too was pleased with her win: “She beat me 3/1 last time we played, in Edinburgh, so I had revenge to take, I guess.

“It’s nice to win matches quickly,” added Maud, “I should do that more often!”

The semi-finals start at 19.00 on Thursday with full coverage and live streaming on SiteSquash.com.
