Perry Prevails In Ile Rousse Final by Fram Gommendy
June 22, 2012
- England’s Sarah-Jane Perry claimed her second career WSA title as she
won the final of the 16th Ile Rousse International at Squash Loisirs on
the French island of Corsica.
Her opponent enjoyed the support of the home crowd, and gave the
Englishwoman her toughest match of the week, but sixth-seed Laura
Pomportes, playing in her first WSA final, ultimately fell 13/11, 11/7,
6/11, 11/4 in 45 minutes, the longest of the tournament.
Despite leading for most of the first game the French favourite lost
out on extra points, fell two games behind but capitalised on some
errors from Perry to pull a game back.
A slip early in the fourt hampered Pomportes movement, and despite
hitting some crisp winners it was Perry who stepped up to the mark to
quickly finish off the game and the match.
“A bit frustrated,” said Pomportes after the match. “I could feel I was
playing better an better and then I had to go and slip and twist my
ankle. Oh well, it happens!”
Perry was as much relieved as pleased: “Nothing ruthless today,” she
admitted, “I was a bit slow at the start and had nothing in my shots.
All credit to Laura in the first, it took me a while to realise I was
going to have to work hard, but I had a typical lapse in the third.
“A week off now before starting training again - not here, unfortunately, unless I miss my plane on purpose!”
Final:
