Nour El Sherbini Commits To World Juniors In Quest For Third World Title from Squash365
June 22, 2013
- Current World number 11 Nour El Sherbini will be one of almost 200
players to compete at the upcoming World Junior Championships to be
held in Wrocław, Poland, from 15th to 27th July.
The 17-year-old Egyptian wrote squash history on more than one
occasion; she won the prestigious British Junior Open in three
different age categories, is the youngest player to ever play in a
senior British Open final, was crowned World Junior Champion in 2009 at
only 13 years of age, and last year helped her national team to win a
senior World Team Championship.
In July she will aim to make it three World Junior titles in four years.
If she reaches the final, Sherbini will have a chance to play on the
all-glass court that will be erected in a newly opened section of the
Hasta La Vista Club (the biggest squash club in Central and Eastern
Europe) where the competition takes place. The stands around the court
are prepared to hold a crowd of over 600 spectators.
There are already 87 girls and 83 boys under the age of 19 from all
corners of the globe registered to compete in the biggest squash event
Poland has ever hosted.
This year it's the turn of the Girls to have their Team Championship in
the days following the individual championships, and Sherbini will be
looking to lead the Egyptian team to a third successive victory
following their wins in Chennai 2009 and Boston 2011.
"The World Junior Championship 2013 in Wrocław is the milestone to the
expansion of squash in our country," said Tomasz Banasiak, President of
the Polish Squash Federation. "It will also be a test for a sport
competing not only for Olympic recognition, but for a place at the
World Games 2017 as well."
The latter will also be held in Wrocław and as World Games director
Hanna Domagała admits, "Squash has a great chance to be part of our
program and the way this tournament plays out will surely have a
bearing on our decision."
