- Top-ranked US Girls' junior Maria Elena Ubina defeated Nele Gilis of
Belgium in five games yesterday to capture the Girls Under-19 title at
the 2012 Pioneer Cup in Cologne, Germany.
Ubina won the first two games, lost the next two, and prevailed 11-8 in an exciting fifth to close out a 62-minute battle.
The linescore was: 11-8 11-9 9-11 8-11 11-8.
The Pioneer Open is considered one of the major tournaments on the European junior calendar.
Maria entered the event as the #1 seed. She straight-setted opponents
Olivia Wherry of the US, Enora Villard of France and Caroline Sayegh of
Germany en route to the final.
In the Boys' U-19s, Faraz Khan of the US and Ryan Todd of Canada each won two matches before losing in round-of-16 action.
In Girls' Under-17 play, Lindsey Scott of Riverside, CT, seeded
5/8, won four matches to reach the finals before losing to Emilia
Soini of Finland in four games.
In the Boys' U-17s, Americans Jordan Brail and Soren Larsen each qualified into the event and proceeded to reach the quarters.
