June 28, 2015 - You should still be in Southern drawl accent. Come on now y’all.
A good night’s sleep and the gang was up and once again ready to keep
ahead of any State troopers, posses and other officials! Amarillo had
been a good lay-up place, especially for Lil Missy, Big Bad Jerry, and
whiskey Mark. Cristian was still working on forgivin’ them their
transgressions! But we were ready to ride and once again we were going
to be on Route 66 for most of the way roughly 90 miles, but we were up
for it.
With Amarillo to our back and passing Rick Husband International
airport and the train line we rode to Groom and had lunch. We lost
Route 66 as if joined highway 40 so we wagoned it 8 miles and picked up
Route 66 again. A lot of the time we were on the original Route 66. Sad
to see so many buildings in ruins and talking to locals they told us
that many people just up and left once highway 40 was built. Although
they also said that the less scrupulous set fire to their property and
tried to claim insurance monies! Wonder how many succeeded?
Past Shamrock and on to Texola, where we crossed the Texas border and
into Oklahoma and at this point we thought that we were about 5 miles
from Elk City, where we were going to camp. In fact we were 20 miles
away, but it’s a good ploy to get the young riders out of the wagon and
onto the road. Once we had ridden the 5 miles we then told them it was
another 15 miles to go! Lil Missy was not happy but continued on the
full way. El Reno was where we were headed for to set up camp. Now we’d
seen some huge hoardings about Chinese food and that sure sounded like
good tucka’.
W set up camp in El Reno, and it seemed like a good idea to have some
of that good old fashion Chinese. So we have James our wagon driver, go
back into into Elk City to China Super Buffet to collect and back to
feed the hungry gang. Nice ride and everyone ready for the next day too.
