July 14, 2012 -
The 6th-seeded US boys team encountered surprising resistance from #13
Brazil yesterday but came away with a shut-out win in the opening
round of pool play at 2012 World Junior Teams in Qatar.
In the first match on court, US #2 Edward Columbia got past Pedro Viega 12-10 in the third.
Dylan Murray then pulled out an 11-9 in the fifth win over Josemar Silva in the battle of number ones to clinch the US victory. Silva is the current South American junior champion.
TJ Dembinski finished it off by straight-setting Cassiano Silva at the number three slot.
The Americans take on #7 France and #19 Guatemala today.
US Coach Paul Assaiante had this to say:
"I think we had a bit of nerves today, with everybody focusing on the big match tomorrow against France.
"Edward was solid today.
"Dylan was in a real fight in the fifth, had to do a gutcheck, and he gets the game ball for us today.
"TJ played relaxed and executed well, beating a boy he should probably beat.
"Tomorrow's France match will be the tell-tale for the rest of the week."
