Day Two Report: Doha WSF Men’s World Junior Team Championships 2012 by Steve Cubbins
July 14, 2012 -
It was a dramatic second day of Pool action at the Doha WSF Men’s World
Junior Team Championships in Qatar, where the top seeds all made it
through to the playoff stage safely enough, but Japan, Brazil and
Germany produced a trio of upsets in the final session of play to claim
second place in their pools and unexpected places in the draw for the
top twelve teams.
Morning Session:
Pool D: [4] India 3-0 [9] Australia , Germany 2-1 Qatar
Pool E: [5] Hong Kong 3-0 [8] Colombia
Pool F: [6] Usa 3-0 [7] France , Brazil 3-0 Guatemala
Fourth seeds India duly completed a second win to take charge of Pool D
while Germany beat hosts Qatar to set up a meeting with Australia to
see who finishes second.
Hong Kong topped Pool E with victory over Colombia, leaving the South Americans to play Japan for second place.
The closest match on paper proved so on court too, with Dylan Murray
winning 11/9 in the fifth to put the USA two-nil up over France and a
give his team a likely top spot in Pool F.
Afternoon Matches:
Pool A: [1] Egypt 3-0 Argentina , [12] Kuwait 2-0 Switzerland
Pool B: [2] Pakistan 3-0 Iraq , [11] New Zealand 3-0 South Africa
Pool C: [3] England 3-0 Zimbabwe , [10] Canada 2-1 Belgium
The top three seeds of Egypt, Pakistan and England wasted no time in
completing their third straight 3-0 wins to finish top of their
respective pools to take up favoured positions in the playoff draw.
Seeds 10, 11 and 12 finished in second places as expected, but none of
them had it easy - Canada went to three against Belgium, New Zealand
needed two 3-2 wins to see off South Africa, and Kuwait were given a
stern test by Switzerland who will feel aggrieved at the 3-0 scoreline.
Evening Matches:
Pool D: [4] India 3-0 Qatar , [9] Australia 1-2 Germany
Pool E: [8] Colombia 1-2 Japan
Pool F: [6] Usa 3-0 Guatemala , [7] France 1-2 Brazil
India and the USA duly completed their third wins to top their pools,
but there was plenty of drama elsewhere as the teams seeded 7th, 8th
and 9th were relegated to the 13-23 place playoffs.
A delighted Japan made sure of their best-ever finish by beating 8th
seeded Colombia as Ryosei Kobayashi won an exciting top strin tie to
put Japan 2-0 up. Brazil also guaranteed themselves a best-ever placing
as they beat 7th seeds France after going one-nil down, and to round
off a hat-trick of upsets Germany put 9th seeds Australia out of the
top group, also in a deciding match.
