July 16, 2012
- DOHA - Defending champions Egypt continued their dominance over the
field at the World Jr. Squash Team Championships with a convincing 3-0
victory over Canada, earlier today in the quarterfinals. The
Canadian Team, which is seeded 10th in this year’s event, defeated
Brazil yesterday 2-0 in the round of 16. The Egyptian team got
wins from Mazen Hisham and two-time junior individual world champion
Marwan El Shorbagy to clinch the win for Egypt. With today’s
victory, Egypt will take on #4 seed India in the semi finals who beat
Hong Kong 2-1. The other quarterfinal matches saw England defeat USA
3-0 and Pakistan defeat Japan 2-0.
For the Canadians, Zachary Leman and Tyler Olson both improved as their
matches progressed, but neither was able to capture a game despite
coming close in the third. Team Canada Junior Men’s National
Coach Jonathan Hill said, “Egypt are so strong, their attacking ability
is second to none. We knew going into the match that we would
find it difficult against the top seeds”. The reigning World
Champion Egypt has been the leading squash nation in the world and Hill
commented, “We’re proud of our guys for getting into the top eight and
hope they can take some lessons from today’s matches and come out
stronger next time they come up against the Egyptians – they play such
a strong, attacking short game, second to none and it’s really exciting
to watch.”
Canada now moves into the consolation round to play for 5th – 8th
place. Canada will take on #5 seeds Hong Kong, while; USA takes
on the tournament’s surprise team Japan on Tuesday. The
tournament wraps up on Wednesday.
