- Team Canada ran into a strong Hong Kong contingent today in Doha in
the 5/8 consolation playoff round, and competed well but was beaten 2-0.
The 10th-seeded Canadians play the 6th-seeded US this morning for 7th place in the championships, with the loser finishing 8th.
Yip Tsz Fung opened the match by winning three tight games against Canada's #1 Cameron Seth, 11-6 11-9 11-7.
Yeung Ho Wai then beat Tyler Olson in four, 11-9 11-5 6-11 11-7.
The Hong Kong team entered the tournament seeded 5th. They swept their
pool matches and shut out New Zealand in the opening playoff round
before losing 2-1 to #4 India in the quarters in a match that
came down to 12-10 in the fourth game of the final contest.
Hong Kong will play Japan, a winner over Team USA, for 5th place.
Team Canada Head Coach Jonathan Hill told DSR:
"We were hoping that either our #1 or #2 would get a win for us setting the stage for a tiebreaker.
"Our #3 was quite fresh so we would have been excited about a best of 5 match for him.
"They are a tough team with great discipline so we knew it would be tough.
"Our team is really excited about playing the US team.......on paper I
think we are well matched and it should make for a very exciting
playoff."
