Former PSA Top-Four Chris Walker Undergoes Successful Hip Surgery, Plans Full Return To Pro Doubles Tour by Rob Dinerman
Dateline July 18th
--- Chris Walker, one of the few players in squash to have been ranked
in the top four on both the PSA pro singles tour and the ISDA pro
doubles circuit and for many years the coach of the USA men’s team,
underwent a successful total hip replacement operation on his right leg
this past Friday afternoon. It was performed at the New England Baptist
Hospital in Boston by Dr. Stephen Murphy, who has gained renown in
recent years for developing a novel technique in which he is able to
accomplish his mission without cutting any muscle tissue, thereby
greatly reducing the patient’s recovery time and enabling him/her to
return to strenuous exercises like squash substantially faster than the
six- to nine-month rehabilitation period that has historically been
necessary. Indeed Walker was discharged from the hospital
slightly less than 24 hours after the operation was completed, an
unheard of situation after most such procedures. Walker, a finalist in
the 2001 British Open and captain of a number of English teams that won
the World Team Championships before he switched his energies to
coaching and doubles during most of the past decade, had to miss the
last six months of the 2014-15 doubles season but plans to make a full
return to the competitive fray at some point this autumn.
