US Head Coach Paul Assaiante Responds to Pan Am Critique

July 21, 2015

Coach Assaiante offers the following response to the July 19th article:

Pan Am Wall-to-Wall Celebrations Could Be Tempered Just A Bit, by Ted Gross

Dear Ted

As I told you I never write in response to anyone's articles since I believe we can all have our own opinions.

Especially one so well connected as you and one who was also a national team member.

That said I feel I have a responsibility to protect our national team, and I feel that some of what you wrote was off base

The men's lineup was based purely on world rankings.  Chris Gordon is simply ranked higher than Todd Harrity although Todd is on a tear and his day will come.

With regard to our women's team, Gold is gold and we beat who was in front of us.  Was it Egypt, no!  Was it Malaysia, no but anyone who has ever been in a position where they were seeded number one, understands just how hard it is to finish number one.  The bulls eye was on our backs, Canada was a strong team and we were playing in Canada in front of packed houses.

Last year at the worlds Amanda had a very hard four game match with Samantha Cornett and Olivia had a loss to Holly Naughton just this year at the Toc.

If Olivia had not stepped up with a win, and as we saw Natalie Grainger got injured in her match that could have been a loss and then the whole world of squash would have been all over us for underachieving.

And so I say to you and all the nay sayers…..Congratulations to our teams.  And to the women, you won Golds in Canada vs Canada.

No easy task.

Now we will continue to work hard to move up in the world ranks but for now, let's savor a job well done.
