Will the North American (hardball) doubles squash game go the way and be destined to die as (hardball) singles! has?
Let's see! Of the nearly 40 squash-tournaments currently listed on the
U.S. Squash web-site between now and May 1st, only two doubles events
are listed...including the San Diego Access Youth Academy international
junior gold event! And...there's only one girl's doubles team
registered for that one! We hesitate to say, but hardball doubles
became a natural transition from (juniors) playing hardball singles
squash, with very few juniors playing hardball now! There is now no
natural transition from one game to the other! Of course, the expense
of building doubles squash courts comes into play as well, as the
dimensions of 45 feet long, 25 feet wide and at least 24 feet high
makes the size of doubles courts almost price prohibitive. We're afraid
to say...with the squash doubles game now being played by (mostly) the
"mature" generation, we believe it will follow in the footsteps of the
hardball singles game. We also believe that building a doubles court at
the new Access Youth Academy facility in San Diego was a mistake! At
least, converting doubles squash courts to international singles courts
won't be as hard...or as expensive to do! However, it more than likely
won't be in our lifetime! Guess we'll all just have to wait and see!
