Krizek And Pierrepont Are Top Seeds In Season-Ending WDSA Wilson Cup by Rob Dinerman
Dateline July 24th
--- Defending champions Suzie Pierrepont and Narelle Krizek will be
headlining an eight-team field at the season-ending second annual
Wilson Cup, which begins on Thursday and will be hosted by the
Elmaleh/Stanton Center in Southhampton, N. Y. This is a non-ranking
event open only to those players who have earned top-16 rankings for
their play in the seven ranking WDSA pro women’s doubles tournaments
this past season.
Pierrepont and Krizek, who won the 2010 U. S. National Doubles and took
the inaugural Wilson Cup last summer with an exciting five-game
final-round win over Natarsha McElhinny and Steph Hewitt, compiled an
undefeated 2012-13 slate by winning all three tour stops in which they
partnered up, namely in Philadelphia, John’s Island (in Florida) and
Chicago. Current U. S. National Doubles champs Hewitt and Dana Betts,
whom Pierrepont and Krizek defeated in the finals in John’s Island and
Chicago, are the second seeds, followed by third/fourth seeds Emily
Lungstrum/McElhinny (who are in the draw’s top half) and Carrie
Hastings/Tina Rix, the young British duo reached the semifinals of the
recent World Doubles. Amanda Sobhy, who teamed with Natalie Grainger to
capture that World Doubles event in New York in April, and her partner
Victoria Simonds should give the top seeds a good opening-round test,
while Lungstrum and McElhinny will play Alex Clarke and the veteran
Canadian Karen Jerome. The bottom-half quarterfinals will pit Hastings
and Rix against Philadelphians Dawn Gray and Amy Milanek, with Betts
and Hewitt taking on Joyce Davenport and Heidi Mather. The semis will
be held on Friday afternoon, with the final scheduled for Saturday at 4
PM.
