Winners Steph Hewitt/Meredeth Quick (purple), Scott Wilson (Morgan Stanley), Finalists Suzie Pierrepont/Tehani Guruge
Dateline July 26th
--- Meredeth Quick and Steph Hewitt ended the 2013-14 WDSA season
on a victorious note by defeating first-time partners Suzie Pierrepont
and Tehani Guruge 15-10, 11 and 6 this afternoon at the Elmaleh-Stanton
Center in Southampton in the final round of the third annual Wilson
Cup. Byed to the semis of this six-team invitational event by virtue of
their top-seeded status, Quick and Hewitt won a competitive four-game
semifinal against Dana Betts and Tarsh McElhinny Saturday afternoon,
while in the bottom-half semi second seeds Pierrepont and Guruge
out-played Narelle Krizek and Joyce Davenport. Pierrepont and Krizek
have won an all-time high 13 tournaments over the past five years,
including the 2012 and 2013 versions of this Wilson Cup event with
respective final-round wins over Hewitt/McElhinny and Hewitt/Dana Betts.
Today's
final was closely contested until midway through the second game, with
Pierrepont imposing her firepower and Guruge, by far the youngest of
the four players on court, chipping in with winners as well. But Quick
and Hewitt, partners for five years, have acquired a level of teamwork
and cohesion that emphatically asserted itself from that point onward,
enabling them to run out the second game and race through a thoroughly
convincing close-out third. The WDSA is planning an exciting schedule
for the 2014-15 campaign, which will be the eighth since the tour's
founding in Autumn 2007.
