- The final in the WSA Les Pyramides Tournament here on the outskirts
of Paris turned out to be a fantastic exhibition of how squash should
be played, between two players at the opposite end of the age scale.
21 year old Malaysian Low Wee Wern, seeded 7 for this tournament, has
played some great exciting squash all week and came up against
experienced campaigner Alison Waters from England, who had come through
the qualifiers, although we all know the reason Alison is so low in the
rankings at present. That will not be the case very soon the way she is
playing, taking her fourth WSA Title this year.
Wee Wern took the first two points in the first, but Alison stayed calm
and took a 5/2 lead, but Wee Wern kept pace and levelled up at 6/6,
Alison took the lead again at 8/6, Wee Wern again levelled at 8/8 but
Alison then put the finishing touches to the game and won 11/8. Second
game Alison took the first two points but Wee Wern soon moved into a
5/3 lead which Alison turned around again into a 7/5 lead.
Wee Wern then moved confidently into a 9/8 lead, Alison got to game
ball at 10/9, Wee Wern levelled, and again at 11/11, and again at
12/12, then finished off the game in good style at 14/12.
Throughout the first two games both ladies had been playing exquisite
squash, with Wee Wern showing some fantastic retrieving powers and
Alison playing in her usual steady calm controlled manner. In the third
Wee Wern took the first two points but then Alison went on a roll of 5
straight points then unfortunately for her put three consecutive shots
into the tin to allow Wee Wern to level at 5/5.
However with one sweet volley drop she took the serve and
finished the game in one hand at 11/5. Alison had taken more
control of the match as the fourth game started and moved menacingly
into an 8/4 lead, but Wee Wern pulled back to level at 8/8 helped by
two more tins from Alison, but then Alison took control again to finish
the game at 11/8 and the match 3 – 1 after 70 minutes of excellent
squash.
Congratulations to Alison, who is obviously well on course to complete
her come back into the top echelons of the sport, but also
congratulations to Wee Wern for her excellent conduct and play here at
Les Pyramides, I am sure we will be seeing her in many more finals in
the future.
