Abdel Kawy wins Squash Player’s Player of the Month award from Tour Media
July 3, 2015
- Egyptian Omneya Abdel Kawy has been named Player of the Month for
July by the authoritative London-based Squash Player magazine for her
outstanding performances at the Alexandria International Open in June.
The 29-year-old world no.9 upset third seed Alison Waters and then
ended a run of 24 consecutive defeats by Nicol Davidwith a thrilling
3/2 win over the eight-time world champion in the semi-finals of the
$100,000 event in the Egyptian city before losing to compatriot Raneem
El Welily in the final.
“The secret is that I really like to play in Egypt,” Abdel Kawy
explained. “I like the atmosphere and my team, family, friends and home
crowd all supporting me. Iknow they do everywhere, but in Egypt you see
and feel it.
“In Nicol's matchI had no pressure at all. Last time we played here in
Egypt I played reallywell, but I made a crucial mistake, which made me
lose that day. I worked with my coaches so that would never happen
again – and it worked.
“It was really hard to play this tournament without my dad (may he rest
in peace), but he gave me the push to give it all and do my best.
“My target now is to play all my matches the same way and improve my ranking.”
