Dubai Squash Show Night is First Casualty of Egyptian Events by Alan Thatcher
July 5, 2013 - A major squash activity is the first sporting casualty following international reaction to events unfolding in Egypt.
Brothers Mohamed and Marwan Elshorbagy have been unable to reach Dubai because of travel restrictions in the region.
The two world junior champions, from Alexandria, were due to be the
headline act in the Dubai Squash Show Night at the Dubai World Trade
Centre, which was set to launch the month-long Dubai Sports Festival.
With the glass court, donated by Courtwall International, already set
up in the venue, ticket holders were informed that the event had been
postponed, hopefully for a matter of days.
Wolfgang Denk, chief executive of Courtwall, said: “This is very
disappointing. Mohamed and Marwan were very enthusiastic about coming
to Dubai, putting on a great show and helping to grow the sport
throughout the Emirates.
“We hope the issue can be resolved as soon as possible to allow these
wonderful athletes to come over here and entertain the Dubai squash
community.”
World No.6 Mohamed Elshorbagy had attempted to fly to Dubai from
Venezuela, where he was accompanying women’s world champion Nicol David
of Malaysia on a World Squash Federation promotional visit.
