Samantha Teran Back On Top In Bogota by Howard Harding
August 10, 2014
- Mexican squash star Samantha Teran ended a two-year title drought
when she upset England's top seed Victoria Lust in the final of the
Women's Club El Nogal Colombian Open to win the WSA Tour 15 event at
Club El Nogal in Bogota, Colombia.
Making a comeback
after injury, the 33-year-old from Mexico City reached the final - the
20th Tour final of her career - after despatching local star Catalina
Pelaez 11-3, 11-5, 11-4 in the semi-finals.
Unseeded Pelaez, a
22-year-old from Bogota ranked outside the world's top 150, secured her
unexpected semi slot after upsetting Australia's No4 seed Sarah
Cardwell in straight games.
Top seed Lust, the Canada-based world No32, cruised into the final after seeing off France's third seed Coline Aumard.
The final was Teran
and Lust's second meeting of the year - but Mexico's most successful
player of all-time made up for her defeat in the Mayfair Open in Canada
by beating Lust (both pictured above) 11-7, 11-6, 11-9 in 42 minutes to
win the 16th WSA Tour title of her career.
"After my injury, I
thought it would be impossible to return to this level," said the
jubilant Teran after her triumph. "Today I am happy because I won a
tournament after a long recovery and did it in a city and a country
that I consider my second home.
"I feel very happy," said the former world No11 from Mexico City.
