Charlton Robs Rafa In Maringa Park PSA Upset by Howard Harding
17 September 2012
- England's Eddie Charlton celebrated his first appearance in Brazil
for more than two years by upsetting local hero Rafael Alarcon in the
final of the Maringa Park Open to win the inaugural PSA World Tour
Challenger 5 squash event at Shopping Mall Maringa Park in Maringa.
Top seed Alarcon, the
Brazilian number one, is enjoying one of the best runs of his career.
Ranked 16 places higher the Englishman, the 35-year-old was celebrating
his fifth successive appearance in a PSA Tour final this year.
But it was Charlton
who took the early lead on the all-glass court at the Maringa Park
Shopping Mall, before Alarcon drew level after the second game.
The win pattern was
repeated in games three and four before the match moved into a fifth
game decider - the first for both players in the tournament.
But, in his first
clash with Alarcon for more than three years, it was second seed
Charlton who held his nerve to close out the match 13-11, 8-11, 11-5,
6-11, 11-6 and record his first ever win over the illustrious Brazilian.
The title triumph marks the 24-year-old from Nottingham's second Tour title.
