Hanscom Handicaps Today's Intriguing Weymuller Qualifying Matchups
September 25, 2012
- The $50,000 WSA Carol Weymuller Open begins today at Heights Casino in Brooklyn, NY,
with a loaded 16-woman qualifying draw featuring several interesting
first-round matchups.
Bob Hanscom Handicaps Tonight's Action:
Dipika Pallikal (IND) v Maria Toor Pakay (PAK)
With Dipika Pallikal at #15 in the world - and Maria Toor Pakay at #52,
it doesn't seem like Dipika should have a problem, at least on paper!
Toor Pakay is fresh off winning the Southwest Open in Phoenix. Let's
hope they have a good referee for that one! My prediction is Pallikal
over Pakay, 3-1.
Latasha Khan (US) v Kanzy El-Defrawy (EGY)
For our seven-time U.S. national champion Latasha Khan versus
Kanzy El-Defrawy match, although Khan is ranked four places higher in
the world rankings than Defrway, (#28 versus #32) Khan at 39 years of
age - and Defrawy at 18 and playing well, my prediction is Defrawy in
five! But of course, we wish our many-time American champion all the
best in the match.
Jaclyn Hawkes (NZL) v Nicolette Fernandez (GUY)
Jaclyn Hawkes at #19 in the world, should not be challenged by Nicolette Fernandez at #64. Hawkes in three over Fernandez.
Nour El Tayeb (EGY) v Kristen Lange (US)
For the Nour El Tayeb match against Kristen Lange, Tayeb at #21 and
Lange at # 64 should tell the story...Tayeb in three over Lange.
However, representing the United States, we wish Kristen all the best
in that challenge.
Sarah Kippax (ENG) v Sam Cornett (CAN)
The Sarah Kippax versus Samantha Cornett match should be more
competitive, but with Kippax at #22 in the world, and Cornett at #36,
Kippax certainly has the edge. Prediction...Kippax in four over Cornett.
Donna Urquhart (AUS) v Coline Aumard (FRA)
The Donna Urquhart versus Collen Aumard match should be another three
straight affair for Urquhart at #17 in the world over Aumard, who is
not currently WSA ranked.
Misaki Kobayashi (JPN) v Amanda Sobhy (US)
The Misaki Kobayashi at world #33 versus Amanda Sobhy at #20 match
should be a good one. Depending on the day and who's playing at their
best, Sobhy should prevail, perhaps in four games.
Alison Waters (ENG) v Brigit Coufal (AUT)
The Alison Waters match with Birgit Coufal, ranked at #9 (formally #3)
and #60 in the world respectively, should be a one-sided affair, with
Waters winning in three relatively easy ones.
So...with Pallikal, De Frawy, Hawkes, Tayeb, Kippax, Urquhart, Sobhy
and Waters theoretically moving into the second round of the
qualifiers, the match-ups should prove very interesting, to say the
least!
