British Army Team Defeats Union League Club by Andy Garr
September 26, 2012
- The Union League Club proved to be generous hosts to the
British Army Team playing its second of eight matches with New York
area clubs during a 13-day tour organized by New York Squash.
They provided beer, whites and friendly sport. Too friendly
perhaps as they dropped eight of nine matches in the British 8-1
victory. Many matches were close and the play was spirited.
The British continue their adjustment to New York and have an advantage
of long workouts at a secret site known only as the “Junction.”
NYSquash, in need of additional courts has been assured that the site
will be disclosed at the end of the tour.
Andrew Scott, a NYSquash board member filled in for an injured British
player and, though offered substantial inducements to lose the match,
defeated his ULC opponent. This gesture of fine sportsmanship
will no doubt be rewarded by additional assignments at the next
NYSquash board meeting.
The New York Squash representative discovered (or filched) a card that
apparently all of the British members carry. Perhaps that gives
the players a psychological advantage. It is reproduced below so
that all college and school coaches will have equal access to it:
