Canadian Women's World Teams Trials To Be Held This Weekend In Toronto by Danny Da Costa
Sam Cornett
TORONTO, ON (Sept 27th 2012)
– This weekend the National Squash Academy will play host to the Squash
Canada Women’s World Team Trials. These trials will finalize who will
represent Canada at the 2013 Women’s World Team Championships, November
12-17 in Nimes, France.
Play begins Friday night, as the eight women compete in pool play
matches. Each participant will play three matches within their pool on
Friday and Saturday, followed by one cross over match on Sunday. The
winners of each pool will be selected to represent Canada. A playoff
match between the second place finishers in each pool will fill the
final team spot and determine the non-travelling reserve.
The pool lists are as follows:
Pool A: Alex Norman (Quebec), Nikki Todd (Saskatchewan), Elka Markus (Ontario), Seanna Keating (Ontario)
Pool B: Stephanie Edmison (Ontario), Susie King (Alberta), Hollie Naughton (Ontario), Louise Lefebvre (Quebec)
Samantha Cornett (Ontario) has already qualified for the team based on
her second place finish at the 2012 Canadian Squash Championships.
Cornett will be making her second appearance at the Women’s World
Championships, as she was also a member of the 2010 World’s Team. Alex
Norman and Stephanie Edmison were also members of that team, and will
be looking for a strong showing so they can represent Canada once
again.
The Women’s World Team Championships are held every two years, bringing
together the top squash playing nations in the world. New Zealand
hosted the event in 2010, where Canada finished in 13th. Canada will
look to improve on this finish, and continue to build towards the 2014
Championships, which will be hosted right here in Canada at The Club at
White Oaks in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.
The National Squash Academy welcomes any spectators who wish to catch
the action and support Canadian squash. Matches begin at 6:15pm on
Friday, September 28th. Saturday will feature a morning session of
matches beginning at 10am, and an evening session at 5pm. The final
group of matches will be played at 11am on Sunday, when the team will
be determined.
