Waters Captures WSA New South Wales by Elliot Selby
September 2, 2013
- South Africa's number one Siyoli Waters justified her top seeding at
the New South Wales Open with a four game win over second seed Sarah
Cardwell in the final.
Waters didn't have an
easy route to the final, requiring four games and tie breaks to finish
off Tamika Saxby and compatriot Milnay Louw in the quarter final and
semi final respectively.
Louw had earlier taken out sixth seed Jennifer Brown and third seed Christine Nunn.
Cardwell eased through
to the semi final before facing a resurgent Lisa Camilleri, who has
returned to the tour in recent months after more than 18 months
sidelined with injury. Cardwell took a two game lead before Camilleri
retired through injury.
Cardwell, who was
aiming for her second WSA title, came out of the blocks firing and
surprised Waters to take the first game 11-2. Waters stepped up a gear
at the start of the second game and from then on was always in control,
taking the next three games 11-5, 11-2, 11-5.
A sixth WSA title for
Waters and a third title in 2013. Waters joins Amanda Sobhy and
Sarah-Jane Perry as the only players with three titles in 2013 so far.
Waters will aim for a tour leading fourth WSA title of 2013 at the
North Coast Open this week.
