British Team Defeated by NYSquash Team at Easter Athletic Club by Andy Garr
September 8, 2014 -
On Friday, September 5, before a capacity crowd at the Eastern Athletic
Club, a New York team defeated a game RAPTC team 8-3. The
highlight match featured a well-known name in American squash, Will
Carlin winning a close 3-1 decision over the EAC pro Adam Walker.
Walker was inducted into the British Army (commissioned a Major) that
evening by special dispensation from the British Secretary of War.
Walker left England for other pastures 20 years ago, but all observers
seemed to feel that he played his heart out for his native land. Carlin
played aggressively and capitalized on many of Walker’s errors.
After the match Walker was quickly decommissioned honorably.
The Brits seemed to
pick up a bit where the beer was brought out, but appeared tired after
a long workout at the Junction that afternoon. The workout was ordered
from London after the British team dropped the tour opener at
Princeton/Harvard the night before. They also seemed flat after
ExPvt Gabriella Sarah failed to appear to play for them. Her father
forcibly took Sarah back to her convent-like school in New Jersey after
she surprisingly appeared the night before at the Princeton Club. The
NYSquash tour director suspected of “tipping off” Sarah’s father to her
appearance in New York the night before, was heard to say, “she
probably could not find Brooklyn.”
The British team
chairman, a different title every night, protested long and loud that
his players were greatly inhibited by having to wear eye protection. He
could not believe that the requirement is contained in the New York
Municipal Law. He asked if the scheduled match for Tuesday would
contain this rule since it will be played in Mamaroneck, which he was
told was not part of New York City.
