Students from Hartford, New York, Oakland, and Cincinnati during SEA's Summer Academy at Kent School.
SEA students from all over the country participated in a multitude of educational and athletic experiences this summer, including squash tournaments and camps, civic engagement opportunities, and multi-week academic programs. Highlights include:
  • SEA Individual Nationals - 349 students from 21 member programs and two international partners participated in SEA's flagship tournament at Berkshire School and Salisbury School.
  • Summer Academy - 88 students attended SEA's four-week squash camp at the Kent School in Connecticut.
  • Changemakers Tour - 14 students traveled from Washington, D.C. to New York City on an 7-day educational and civics journey.
  • Summer School Scholarships - 83 students earned SEA scholarships to attend multi-week academic programs at boarding schools and colleges across the country.
  • Alumni Reunion - 80 alumni from 12 member programs gathered in Boston for a squash tournament, career workshops, and a celebratory dinner.
  • Midwest Championships - 126 students from 11 programs and one international partner participated in the Midwest Championships at Pittsburgh's Steel City Squash's brand-new facility. 
SEA is proud of all the events that took place this summer, bringing together students from the network to learn, play, and have fun. We would like to thank all of our programs and partners for helping create such positive and enriching experiences. 
349 Students Competed in SEA Individual Nationals; Squash Urbano, SquashBusters, CitySquash, MetroSquash and StreetSquash Captured Trophies 
SEA’s 20th Individual Nationals took place at Berkshire School and Salisbury School from June 14-16, bringing together 349 players from 21 U.S. member program and two international partners. As one of our network’s oldest and most cherished events, this three-day tournament featured an awards ceremony, and a Saturday lunch with representatives from college squash programs and private schools. SEA students stayed in dorms, ate in the dining halls, and enjoyed the beautiful campuses of Berkshire and Salisbury. 

In the A draws’ Squash Urbano Colombia, New York’s CitySquash, and Boston’s SquashBusters led the way, winning two draws each. Squash Urbano Colombia captured the Girls Under 19 and Boys Under 17 division, CitySquash won the Girls Under 17 and Boys Under 13 draws, while SquashBusters, led by the Muyongo siblings, took home the Under Girls 15 and Under Boys 15 trophies. New York’s StreetSquash won the Boys Under 19 Draw, and Chicago’s MetroSquash won the Girls Under 13 draw.

Boston's SquashBusters' twins, Jason Muyonjo and Myra Muyonjo, won the Under Boys 15 and Under Girls 15 draws.
StreetSquash's Mathew Dayle defeated Rally Portland's Tommy Le to win the Under Boys 19 draw. 
Squash Urbano Colombia's Santiago Meza and Dailyn Simancas captured the Boys Under 17 and Girls Under 19 titles, with Dailyn not dropping a single game. 
Capitol Squash's students on the Salisbury School campus, where the Under 13 and Under 15 draws were held. 
 Rally Portland's Le twins faced off in the Under Boys 19 semi final match in which Tommy triumphed over his brother with a 12-10 win in the fifth game. 
Berkshire's Soffer Athletic Center hosted the Under 17 and Under 19 divisions. 
Kent School Brings 88 Students to Connecticut for SEA's 4th Summer Academy
In July, 88 middle and high students from 20 U.S. member programs participated in SEA's 4th annual Summer Academy. Consisting of a 14-day session for members of SEA's High Performance Team and two five-day sessions, the overnight camp took place at Kent School in Connecticut, and provided students with top-level squash training, academic enrichment activities, and the opportunity to build relationships with peers from across the country.

"SEA students showed up to Summer Academy at Kent with great attitudes and ready to soak up all the squash experience from our excellent coaches," said SEA Summer Academy Director Brendan McClintick. "I can't imagine a better place, better people, or better students, than what we had this summer." 


“SEA Summer Academy was a great experience," said Capitol Squash student Melanie. “My older peers were such great role models for me and the staff and coaches were always helping you out if you were struggling on court. They were supportive and I would love to be with them again next year.” Read more... 
 
32 players from SEA's High Performance Team participated in the camp's 14-day session.
College coaches from Bowdoin, Columbia, Colby, St. Lawrence, Navy, Vassar, Bard, and Hobart and William and Smith College participated in the College Showcase.
 Access Youth Academy's students traveled all the way from San Diego to participate in SEA's Summer Academy. 
716 Buffalo's students gave SEA's Summer Academy a thumbs up.

From D.C. to NYC: SEA Students Study Food Insecurity With Leading Advocates

From July 7-13, 14 high school students from the SEA network embarked on a 7-day journey during SEA’s 10th Changemakers Tour. Students traveled around Washington, D.C. and New York City to study the complicated and far-reaching issue of food insecurity, hearing from various experts in the field and reflecting on their own role as agents of change in their communities. 

Over the course of the week, students attended the Gen Z Food and Hunger Summit hosted by the Congressional Hunger Caucus, volunteered at a community food drive with Thrive DC, explored an urban farm with Harlem Grown, and engaged in discussions about food insecurity with Steph Niauparo, founder of Plantilla Power, and Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America. 

Students also had a chance to meet with Former Attorney General Karl Racine, tour the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and speak with journalists at the New York Times. The week was not complete without squash sessions at Squash on Fire in D.C. and StreetSquash in Harlem, and a culminating trip to watch the Mets play at Citi Field.

Squash on Fire hosted SEA's students for a squash session with members of the D.C. squash community.  
In Washington, D.C., students met with former D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine who spoke about his career and engaged in a discussion on restorative justice. 
At the offices of The New York Times, students spoke with journalists who have investigated issues related to homelessness and food insecurity, including a Pulitzer Prize winner. 
With Scholarships from SEA, 83 Students Attend Overnight Summer School Programs 
SEA provided scholarships to a record-breaking 83 students to attend multi-week summer school programs at boarding schools and colleges. 
  • 49 students enrolled in pre-college programs at Brown, Connecticut College, Harvard, Northwestern, Temple, UC Berkeley, University of Chicago, University of Michigan, Notre Dame, University of Rochester, Washington University, and a new summer school partner and the first HBCU, Xavier University of Louisiana.  
  • 34 students enrolled in academic programs at Andover, Choate, Exeter, Hotchkiss, and Taft.

At Andover, students took classes in social psychology, digital photography, expository writing, and pre-law. 
Hartford's Capitol Squash's Dariel and Chicago's MetroSquash's Jalisa took classes in business and finance at the University of Rochester. 
Five SEA students participated in Xavier University's four-week intensive program, choosing between two-justice focused tracks with a focus in STEM and humanities. 
 80 Graduates Travel to Boston for SEA's Alumni Reunion
80 alumni from 12 SEA member programs participated in this year's Alumni Reunion in Boston during the first weekend in August. In addition to the annual alumni squash tournament, the event featured workshops on financial literacy and mental health, alumni-led career panels, and networking opportunities. 

During the celebratory Saturday night dinner, SquashSmarts' alum and the keynote speaker Kareem Price said,
The impact of the SquashSmarts program on my life has been profound. Through the program, I learned invaluable lessons about discipline, perseverance and teamwork. Beyond the court, squash has been a gateway to building relationships and networking with incredible individuals who share a passion for the sport." 

Squash Haven's graduate Rachel Matamoros took home the first-place trophy in the women's A draw for the second year in a row and CitySquash's Chris Fernandez finished first in the men's A draw. 

“This year’s Alumni Reunion was a fantastic opportunity for SEA’s alumni to network, celebrate each other’s achievements, and participate in valuable workshops,” said SEA’s Director of Postsecondary Pathways and CitySquash alumna Manuela Perez. “The weekend was a perfect blend of squash, celebrations, and enriching life experiences.”    

 
Philadelphia's SquashSmarts graduates proudly represented their program during the alumni squash tournament. 
SquashBusters' Mei Juan Ruan and Losangela Batista participated in the annual squash tournament, with Losangela taking home the title in a five-set match. 
Racquet Up Detroit's Aaron Levy led a workshop in financial planning and literacy. 
 Steel City Squash Hosts SEA's Midwest Championship in Their New Facility
From July 17-19 SEA hosted the Midwest Championship in Pittsburgh at Steel City Squash's new facility, bringing together 126 students from six member programs and one international partner. During the tournament, students stayed in the Chatham University dorms. 

"Hosting the Midwest Championship was a dream come true for Steel City Squash," said Executive Director Brad Young. "For years we have been unable to showcase the real impact of SEA programming, and the level of excitement that it generated in our community is hard to quantify. We had stakeholders at every level literally moved to tears seeing our students competing and our state-of-the-art facility filled. With the success of the Midwestern Championships as our template, we are excited to bring more opportunities for members of our community to engage with SCS in the future."

Of the nine draws, Houston's Mission Success, Philadelphia's SquashSmarts, and Urban Squash Cleveland led the way with two first-place finishes. Racquet Up Detroit, Cincinnati Squash Academy, and Chicago's MetroSquash each captured one title. 
Urban Squash Toronto represented SEA's international partners.
Steel City Squash's 19,000 square foot facility opened just days before the tournament. 
Houston's Mission Success, SEA's newest member program, earned two titles and a third-place finish.
Urban Squash Toronto's Carlos Conception and SquashSmarts' Joshua Reynolds faced off in the Under Boys 19 semifinals.
716 Buffalo's Jayda, one of 12 students from Buffalo, participated in her first ever squash tournament.
